The Quintana Joust of Ascoli Piceno, a mesmerising historical reenactment, transports participants and spectators alike back to the grandeur of the Middle Ages. Held annually in the picturesque town of Ascoli Piceno, this event is a celebration of medieval chivalry, culture, and tradition. With roots dating back to the 14th century, the Quintana Joust is not only a thrilling competition, but also a vivid display of communal pride and historical preservation.<\/p>\n

Historical Background<\/h5>\n

The Quintana Joust, or “Giostra della Quintana,” stretches as far back as the medieval era and it chimes with the feast of Saint Emidio, the patron saint of Ascoli Piceno. Saint Emidio, revered for protecting the town from earthquakes, is celebrated with various events of which the joust is the most spectacular. Initially, the Quintana served as a military training for knights, gearing them up for combat and showcasing their prowess in horsemanship and martial skills. Throughout the time, it has morphed into a ceremonial competition, imbued with pageantry and symbolism.<\/p>\n

The Event Structure<\/h5>\n

The Quintana Joust is held twice a year: once in July, known as the “Quintana di Luglio,” and again in August, termed the “Quintana di Agosto.” Each event features a series of meticulously organised activities that culminate in the joust itself.<\/p>\n

The Procession:<\/strong> The festivities are kicked off by a grandiose parade called “Corteo Storico\u201d in which over 1,500 participants don elaborate costumes inspired by the 15th and 16th centuries. This parade, moving through the streets of Ascoli Piceno, includes representatives from the town\u2019s six historical districts, or “sestieri”: Porta Romana, Porta Solest\u00e0, Porta Maggiore, Porta Tufilla, Piazzarola, and Sant’Emidio. The Jousting Tournament:<\/strong> The highlight of the event is the jousting tournament held at a specifically designed arena named “Campo dei Giochi\u201d where knights from each sestiere compete in a test of skills and bravery; the joust involves a series of rides whereby the knights seek to hit with a spear a puppet known as the “Saracen” or “Quintana”. The knight who scores the highest wins the coveted “Palio,” bringing honour and victory to his district.<\/p>\n\n\n

cultural profile. Though, upholding such a centuries-long tradition does not come without checks. The financial and logistical demands of setting up the Quintana are substantial. It requires considerable investment in costumes, equipment, and infrastructure. Furthermore, maintaining the historical authenticity of the event in a rapidly changing world poses ongoing challenges.
